Everyone loves the idea of letting their website sell for them while they’re asleep, to a nationwide, or even worldwide audience. Before taking the leap to build a fancy website and promoting it, you need to ask yourself a few questions and consider the answers carefully.

If you’ve invented a brand new doohicky that no one is selling, you might be seeing dollar signs as you sleep at night when considering the potential. However, consider this; if your item is in fact new, how many people know about it today? If the answer is no one, you have a problem if you’re intending to sell exclusively online. Just because you build it, doesn’t mean that they’ll come. After all, if no one knows about your doohicky, they are NOT searching for it right now. Your job will be to create awareness for it via press releases, advertisements online and offline and getting other companies to help you sell it. That takes time and money.

However, if your online business falls within the category of ‘things already selling’ right now, like toasters, you can sell online and win at Google because toasters are in demand, I presume. It becomes a matter of visibility. Your website needs to rank within the top 5 on the first page of results. Here you’ll get free exposure, traffic, and sales.

I’ve collected statistics over the years that tell you how many clicks and orders you’ll get when you rank 1-10 at Google. All you have to do is enter your Wordtracker results into the correct column in the spreadsheet, and it will calculate everything for an entire year, clicks, sales, and orders. It gives you goals. It tells you what your potential is, and that helps you maintain realistic ideas about selling online. Very handy I think. I use it where ever I go.
